Worthwhile learning beyond the classroom

Art

Our comprehensive visual arts program develops both technical skill and creative expression. From sixth through eighth grade, students explore foundational concepts including line, shape, form, color, pattern, texture, space, and composition.

Instruction spans a wide range of media and techniques, including drawing, painting, collage, papier-mâché, wire sculpture, and clay. Students progress from two-dimensional work to three-dimensional projects, learning how to translate ideas across forms. Drawing remains a core focus, with students practicing gesture drawing, contour work (including hands, faces, and figures), and perspective techniques such as one-point perspective and optical illusions.

Students are also introduced to major artists and artistic movements, studying figures such as Marc Chagall, Pablo Picasso, Georgia O’Keeffe, Vincent van Gogh, Claude Monet, Henri Matisse, Joan Miró, and Henri Rousseau. Through both observation and hands-on work, they build an understanding of artistic styles while developing their own voice and creativity.

Computer Science

Middle school students develop strong digital literacy and research skills through consistent use of technology across the curriculum. Classrooms are equipped with computers, printers, and interactive Smartboards, allowing students to engage with digital tools as part of daily learning.

In the computer lab, students learn to conduct research, evaluate sources, and create written and visual projects using a variety of software and online resources. They build skills in document creation, presentations, and multimedia projects, applying technology to support learning in both general and Judaic studies.

Access to a dedicated computer center and multimedia lab enables students to work independently and collaboratively, strengthening their ability to organize information, communicate ideas clearly, and use technology responsibly and effectively. Enrichment resources in math and language arts further support skill development and academic growth.

Physical Education

The Physical Education program supports students in building lifelong habits of health and fitness. Through a wide range of activities, students develop strength, coordination, and endurance while learning the value of discipline and sportsmanship.

Across middle school, students participate in team and individual sports including basketball, soccer, volleyball, track and field, softball, and football. As they progress through the grades, instruction becomes more advanced, with increased focus on rules, player positions, game strategy, and skill development.

The program emphasizes inclusion and active participation, encouraging every student to engage, improve, and work toward their personal best. At the same time, students develop important social skills – cooperation, communication, and respect for others – that extend beyond the playing field.

By eighth grade, students leave with a strong understanding of how physical activity contributes to overall wellbeing, and with the confidence to participate in sports and fitness throughout their lives.
